Why have a smear test?

Detect the early signs of cervical cancer and treat it quickly with a cervical smear test. NZ has one of the world’s best screening programmes to deal with this highly preventable cancer.

Testing for cervical cancer is an effective way to find changes in your cervix as soon as they occur, before they become cancers. Since the cervical screening programme began in NZ, the number of women dying from cervical cancer has dropped by more than 60%.

Who should have a regular smear test?

  • All women aged 25 to 69
  • Any woman who has ever been sexually active
  • This includes women who only have sex with women, those who have been through menopause and women who are no longer having sex
  • Non-binary and trans people who have a cervix also need regular smear tests

HPV and cervical cancer

Cervical cancer is almost always caused by the human papillomavirus, HPV. This virus is spread through sexual contact and activity.

An estimated 80% of people who have ever been sexually active have had an HPV infection at some time in their lives.

Regular cervical smear screening for Kiwi women helps us prevent you from cervical cancer.
